Free Public Talk Coming to the Fitchburg Historical Society

The Fitchburg Historical Society will present a free history discussion featuring new research on a family that moved to Fitchburg in the booming 1870’s. It is entitled “When Samuel Holton Came to Fitchburg” and will be presented by local historian and genealogist Sara Campbell on Thursday, August 23 at 6:30 p.m.

Samuel and Samantha Holton came to Fitchburg during its largest economic expansion in the late 1800’s and became successful farmers, political leaders and local philanthropists. Local historian and genealogist Sara Campbell has unearthed original documents that shed light on their triumphs and tragedies, as she traces the Holton family along the Fitchburg timeline.

When Campbell encountered the story of Samuel Holton and his family, she was intrigued about the decision that sent him suddenly east to Fitchburg in late middle age, even though his family had been based in Northfield, Massachusetts for six generations. Why did he uproot his family? What was his impact on Fitchburg? What was the city like for newcomers like Samuel and Samantha Holton?

“Everyone has a story,” according to Sara. “I found that the Holton’s were a fascinating family, a real New England success story. My research makes it possible to ‘get to know’ those who have come before us.”

Sara Campbell has taught genealogical research in Fitchburg’s ALFA program. She is a founder of the Turners Falls Genealogy Gathering, and a member of the New England Regional Genealogical Consortium. She has also taught as an historian in residence in the Erving Public Schools and has published widely in genealogy and Massachusetts history.

The Lunenburg Skatepark Project

What is our goal?
To build a permanent, concrete, skate park in the center of town and complete said
project by summer 2019.

Why are we building a skate park?
As local skateboarders, we noticed that there aren’t any safe and legal places to skate. The only true legal place to skate is in the middle of the road! We want Lunenburg’s youth to have a safe place to skate and to cater to all ages and ability levels.

About Us
We are all 8th grade students at the Lunenburg Middle School. Through a common
interest in skate boarding and time afforded to us by the school sponsored Genius Hour
program – we came together and conceived this plan. Genius Hour is a movement that
allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the
classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time
during school.

The Annual Meeting of Leominster Credit Union was held recently at the Credit Union’s Executive and Operations Building in Leominster.

The President’s report presented the financial highlights for 2017. Total assets ending 2017 increased to $677 million from $643 million at the end of 2016. LCU is ranked as the 14th largest credit union in Massachusetts. LCU’s loan portfolio remains strong increasing from $440 million in 2016 to $488 million in 2017

Following the Annual Meeting, the Board of Directors met and elected officers for 2018-2019.

Michael J. Sauvageau, Chairman of the Board. Sauvageau has been on the Board since 2007. Sauvageau serves on LCU’s Executive Committee.

Richard A. Sheppard, Vice Chairman.  Sheppard serves on the Executive, Audit, Investment and Compensation Committees.  He has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2006.

Nancy L. Graves, Treasurer.  Graves serves on the Executive, Credit, Investment, and Advisory Committees. She has served on the LCU Board of Directors since 2004.

Giulio G. Greco, Clerk.  Greco has served as Chairman from 1994-1998 and again from 2008-2011. He currently serves on the Executive, Compensation, Credit and Advisory Committees. Greco has served on the Board since 1978.

Joining the officers on the 2018-2019 Board of Directors are, Amedeo E. Bilotta, Bruce J. Bollivar, Joyce G. Leger, Henry C. Kulik, Jr., Joyce A. LaFleur and Joseph V. Quintal. The Board of Directors is responsible for setting LCU policies.

Andrew D. Cousins retired from the Board this year. Cousins served as Treasurer and had been on the LCU Board since 2005. Andrew and his knowledge of our community was a wonderful asset to our Board and we thank him for his leadership. Nancy L. Graves was voted Treasurer following Cousins retirement.  Nancy L. Dube will be joining the Board of Directors, filling the vacant seat. Nancy Dube is a dedicated Human Resource Consultant with over 30 years’ of experience.  Her background includes work in retail management, direct sales, manufacturing, government, medical, high-tech, aerospace, non-profit and family business. Nancy’s knowledge and skills will add great value to the Leominster Credit Union Board of Directors.

The North Central Career Center and The Montachusett Suicide Prevention Task Force have partnered again for the second annual job fair coinciding with the Ride Of Your Life fundraising event at Monty Tech in Fitchburg –Sunday, August 19th.  The job fair hours will be 10AM-noon while the Ride Of Your Life event hours will be 9AM – 3:30pm.  Proceeds from the event will support a wide variety of suicide prevention initiatives.  The North Central Career Center’s, partnership came about because the loss of a job can add to someone’s depression. With that in mind, promoting employment just really flowed with the whole initiative of what the Taskforce is trying to accomplish with this event.

 

The Ride Of Your Life will feature door prizes, auctions, health clinics and information about the task force and suicide prevention initiatives.
