FAQs
What is considered North Central Massachusetts?
Geographically, North Central Massachusetts encompasses the northern half of Worcester County, the northwest portion of Middlesex County, and a small section of northeastern Franklin County. While the exact boundaries vary slightly, most define the region as comprising the three cities of Fitchburg, Gardner and Leominster and the twenty-four additional communities of Ashburnham, Ashby, Athol, Ayer, Barre, Clinton, Devens, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lancaster, Lunenburg, Orange, Pepperell, Petersham, Phillipston, Princeton, Royalston, Shirley, Sterling, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster, and Winchendon.
While the core of North Central Massachusetts is well-defined, some neighboring towns like Bolton, Holden, Littleton, and West Boylston may be included in broader definitions of the region. The region borders New Hampshire and is located less than an hour west of Boston and thirty minutes north of Worcester, Massachusetts. The region is sometimes referred to as the “Montachusett Region” or “North County”.
What is a Chamber of Commerce?
A chamber of commerce is a voluntary organization of business and professional people who pool resources in order to foster economic development and the quality of life in a particular community or area. Unlike industry-specific associations which focus on promoting a specific industry, a chamber of commerce nurtures the overall economy of a specific, geographic area and typically includes businesses from a variety of industries. A chamber of commerce provides a platform for local firms and business people to collaborate, network, and access resources that help them succeed.
Funded by membership investments, a chamber is not affiliated with government, nor is it accountable to any other organization. Through a board of directors, funds are used to support an office site and hire staff to meet the needs of members, carrying out programs and goals.
By pooling resources and expertise, chambers create a powerful voice for the business community, advocate for pro-business policies, and work to improve the local economic climate. They often serve as a bridge between businesses, local government, and the community at large.
Joining your local chamber can provide valuable connections, resources, and opportunities to grow your business while contributing to the prosperity of your community.

While the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce may partner with other chambers of commerce and/or business organizations, and may maintain membership in some trade groups, it is not tied to or a subsidiary of any of those organizations. As one of the most influential and respected business organizations in Massachusetts, we’ve consistently delivered tangible results that transform our local economy and enhance quality of life.
Our national recognition speaks volumes about our exceptional impact. We were recognized with the prestigious title of Chamber of the Year in 2023, awarded by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives – a first for a chamber in Massachusetts. This coveted honor places us among the most elite chambers nationwide, recognizing our innovative programs, effective advocacy, and outstanding member services.

In Massachusetts, we stand as one of only three chambers to earn this esteemed accreditation, further cementing our position as a leader in the field.
But our uniqueness extends beyond accolades. We are pioneers in developing cutting-edge economic development initiatives, from our robust microloan program that has injected millions into local small businesses, to our innovative workforce development partnerships with local schools and colleges.
