MWCC Named to 2016 Military Friendly Schools List

GARDNER – For the seventh consecutive year, Mount Wachusett Community College has been recognized as a top military-friendly school for veterans, active military members and their dependents.

The 2016 Military Friendly Schools list, released Nov. 5 by Victory Media, features the top American colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace military students and ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation. Now in its seventh year, the designation provides service members and their families with transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities.

“We are proud and honored to receive continued recognized for our ongoing commitment to the men and women who courageously serve our country, and to their families who also make a tremendous sacrifice,” said MWCC President Daniel M. Asquino. “It is our responsibility to foster an environment in which student veterans can thrive as they transition to college life. Their presence and active participation in our classrooms and on our campuses enriches the entire college community.”

A designated Yellow Ribbon School with a long history of supporting veterans, Mount Wachusett is recognized for its wrap-around services provided through the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success and the Veterans Group student club, an affiliate of the Student Veterans of America. Established in 2010, MWCC’s veterans’ success center serves approximately 300 students each year, addressing the unique academic, financial, social and physical needs of veterans, military personnel and military families transitioning to college life.

Close partnerships with community and veteran organizations, such as the Veteran Administration’s VITAL program (Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership) and the Montachusett Veteran Outreach Center, also contribute to the college’s success in serving student veterans, said Bob Mayer, Director of Veterans Services at MWCC.

“Post-secondary institutions earning the 2016 Military Friendly® School award have exceptionally strong programs for transitioning service members and spouses,” said Daniel Nichols, chief Product Officer of Victory Media and a Navy Reserve veterans. The featured schools “are truly aligning their military programs and services with employers to help students translate military experience, skills and training into successful careers after graduation.”
